You know what, I think most people understand patriotism. They also understand wanting a flag flying. They also understand that someone isn't leaving it unlight at night because they'd rather sell out to the Russians, N Koreans, or Chinese. They just don't have a way to easily light it. So, I've been in that boat a lot....no light on a flag at night. Still kept my honorable discharge status. Same people, same patriotism. Light doesn't make anyone more or less willing to back their country all the way to the wall.

However, I will say it's much easier these days to light an outside remote situated flag than it was 50 yrs ago. Amazon sells thousands of different LED/Solar powered (contains a battery for night) lights that can be temporarily or permanently mounted. I have 2 along my  sidewalk that shine on my  flag mounted on the side of my house. They do a nice job. 
Something like these. You can set 3-4 of them out for better coverage & effect. Mine have worked for a couple of yrs trouble free. Even in the winter when the cover with snow, they're easy to brush off & they keep on burning. Will set you back $30. I'm sorry this is one of those Amazon things with a URL that 900 characters long.
