Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | Since it’s the first trip I would try to get non stop flights both ways. Which shouldn’t be too difficult. Might have to pay a little more.
Can they drive to St Louis? Should be able to get a direct flight from there.
I never worry much about which airline. They all seem about the same.
Go early. You have to be there an hour early on a domestic flight. If I were in there shoes I would go two hours or more early to familiarize myself with airports.
