| There have many of those for sale over the last several years and will be more. You can certainly make the sort of cows you want by keeping heifers and some dedication. But with what all costs are today you will have to keep a heifer in production for a long time. Depreciation is a killer in the cow industry. I wonder how many $3,000 cows from six or seven years ago have been sold for 50 cents a pound over the last several years. Two thousand dollars and more depreciation over even six calves is still over three hundred bucks a calf that has to be attributed to the initial cost (or opportunity costs plus what it costs to bring a heifer into production). I'm with Hick on this though the freight out of drought areas might be pretty steep these days. | |
