Going from R12 to R134a is not a good idea. The compressors and other "hardware" is different. Vacuuming out the R134a ad refilling with R1234yf will work pretty well. It will have slightly lower AC performance on the new refrigerant but it is compatible with the compressors and condensers. CO2 requires really high pressures to work and because of that leaks would be very likely. So CO2 in vehicles is not likely to happen. R1234yf is only barely flammable at high pressures. It's flammability is basically a myth created by the German auto makers as a feeble attempt to get the EU to change the mandate to end usage of R134a.
It seems is actually illegal to do what you are suggesting
