Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
Sounds like this is your first machine with a hydro. Everything you described is normal in my experience. You have to think ahead with a hydro. Slow down gradually and don't try to force it to a stop. Descending hills can be perilous. Slow down before you come to a steep hill. If it's real steep, better pick a different range. Do NOT put your foot on that brake unless the machine is stopped. That is not a service brake. It is for parking only. Keep using that and you will find out what expensive is. There should be stickers that tell you that.
