It was basically the first mass-produced pressurized aircraft. In the late 1930s a handful of Boeing 307 airliners were built, which used the wings/engines/undercarriage etc. of a B-17 with a new pressurized fuselage, (a gorgeous airplane) but the war intervened before they could go into full production. There were some variants of the Spitfire and Junkers 88 for very high altitude reconnaissance that were at lest partially pressurized, a few others like the Westland Welkin (another beautiful but almost forgotten bird), the Arado 234 jet- but all of those were made in very limited numbers. |
