The biggest/most difficult advancement during WWII aircraft production to me is the B-29.

So much new tech went into it, it was like building the space shuttle in the late 70's, but instead of a building a handful in the 1940's, you had to mass produce them.

Most expensive weapons platform of WWII, even more than the Manhattan Project
