SW Manitoba.
We have tried air hoe drills (Flexicoil 5000), Seed hawk and disc drills. We use liquid fert so The Flxicoil 5000 had no banders and we just used a Dutch knife and squirted the liquid off to the side, it worked well. Then we used a Seed Hawk which placed our liquid just beside slightly lower than the seed, and it worked well. And we have also tried a disc machine with banders, and it worked well. At the end of the day, I feel it is more what you are comfortable with. You can't get any more simple than a 5710 or Flexicoil 5000 or John Deere 1830. These machine have the fewest moving parts and will last longer than any other drill out there. However, the Seed Hawk style (or Seed Master, 3310, Conservapak etc) will without a doubt give you better seed placement which is a real plus when seeding canola, but the trash clearance is a little poorer on these machines. The disc machines hands down have the best trash clearance and will conserve the most moisture. Every drill has its good and bad points. However, through our own personal experiences, KEEP IT SIMPLE. It all sounds great in the winter to talk about using this or that fancy gadget or gismo, but come spring time, the simpler the better. Not many farmers can afford to have extreme amounts of down time. Just my thoughts.
