Ok, here we go.... First, everything sends and receives - the radio just switches really quickly between the 2 modes. Next, in general an access point configuration is used to have several client radios talking to it. In a point to point setup (WDS among other mfr's terms) has the 2 radios talking exclusively to each other. In general the AP/Client setup is pretty simple and will work just fine especially if you have multiple clients you want to connect (your neighbor could become an illegal wisp - phone companies generally don't want you to resell/rebroadcast the dsl line).

A simple setup would be 2 nanos with one at the dsl side configured as an AP and connected to the dsl router (or whatever router is there) and the other side configured as a client. Put everything in bridge mode and your pc on the other side should get an address from the dsl router and be connected to the internet. There are some configuration things like the AP will need a SSID set (the client can search for this and connect) and there are several security options to keep others from hijacking the link (not a huge problem in rural areas, but there are drivebys "wardrivers" that will link up just to say they did).

The nice thing is that the hardware has improved 100x since 2001 when we started and is much less affected by lightning and power surges and if you use UPS's to power the radios they should last 5 or more years.

Hope this helps,

Pat
