They move all the hay in the narrowest position. In the middle and wide position it piles hay on top of hay.
I've never had a problem with that IF, and I say IF the hay was tedded. If not, it doesn't pick up well.
I'm also a firm believer that the best place for a 254 is in someone else's yard....
