Subject: Closing Wheel Pressure

Van Dyne, WI
How much closing wheel pressure do you guys typically run? I have a JD 1750 planter and work all tilled ground.  I have one Dawn Curvetine and one rubber closing wheel.  I always run in the first position with the least amount of pressure.  Seed trench is closed and not a problem but now that my corn is starting to emerge it looks a little uneven.  There was good moisture but our heavy clay is always a little lumpy.  Was planting yesterday for a neighbor with the tractor with EZ steer, I had time to observe the planter a lot more, seems the closing wheels are "bouncing around a lot."  I'm always worried about too much down force but maybe I need more?  What's your experience as the best way to tell how much closing force is enough?
