The convenience of being able to check one or a group is pretty valuable. The downside is accuracy. When you see definite images of a pregnancy, you can be sure. The problem is those you might call open because you see nothing. She may be very fat, advanced pregnant pulling the uterus out of reach, or you just flat missed her. In todays farm economy, a $5-10K investment in an ultrasound isn't a big hurdle. The real issue is accuracy and confidence. I would certainly advise anyone buying an ultrasound to spend the time and money to be properly trained and any culls checked at the sale barn to verify they were actually open.
