If I plant radish in spring with the oats or barely, it will go to seed and not develop much of a root structure. They are a very different plant if you plant them in spring vs in late summer. The seed also can ripen in time to be a problem in the oats crop, difficult to separate out.

Turnips do not do this, they grow slowly in spring and more normally, and then come on as sun and fertility hit them in fall.
