Subject: Does it hurt an engine to be turned backwards?

MT
It's a 2008 John Deere 6.8 engine that runs a cornell pump. So I'm pumping water up a hill and when I was done I shut it off and the water came back and turned the pump--and the engine, backwards, for about a minute. I didn't want to turn the key on to see how fast it was going for fear it might start in reverse. It started up again with nothing unusual. So I wonder if it can be damaged that way?
