Subject: Yes speed is coming from the GPS directly But

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
Correct, the radar speed is coming from the GPS itself to the Raven or other device. The display is used just to get the code into the GPS indicating that you want to use the radar out and how it should be outputting the information.

If you buy the correct adapter and cable and just plug it in, you will not get any speed indication. You must type the special code into the Versa or another display to turn it on unless someone has already set up your 6500 for radar speed out. Radar speed out is off by default. This means that if an update is done to the GPS, radar out is turned OFF again which requires typing the code in again. Since a GPS update is not a frequent occurrence this a minor inconvenience.
