There is another way.... in my case I rooted my phone and installed a battery charge limit app that actually stops charging when battery reaches 80%, or any percentage I set it to. It does seem to significantly increase battery longevity, at the obvious expense of slightly limited charge capacity.

Buying a phone that "can't" be rooted is like buying a computer that has the administrator account locked out by the manufacturer - it makes no sense. There are a handful of phones available that allow easy bootloader unlocking, which is what is required to root it. Personally I have been using a Oneplus 6T - most if not all OnePlus phones are OEM bootloader unlockable. I went ahead and and installed a custom ROM (LineageOS) and got rid of all the Google spyware in the process.
