Some pumps can be run either as a single or a dual line. Lastbpump we installed was that way., IIRCA, there is a sleeve in the pump as you mentioned that blocks a port when used as a single line. Best bet is to call a dealer that sells that pump or Google the pump model.
If new the installation manual will have instructions as how to plumb both ways.
