Southwest OK | I buy all of my hay. I don’t have the equipment, time or desire to be in a hay field. It works well for me because if hay is too expensive to buy, then I sell cattle. Been doing this for 7 years and have zero desire to go back to haying. I am able to run more cattle since I am not devoting those acres to hay.
You will often hear people say you have to put up your own hay to guarantee quality, and so you’ll have it in a drought. My experience is that there are better hay men than I am, and quality is available, often times for less money if measured by nutrients. I am also not stuck with junk hay. As for droughts, I just sell some and rest pastures. Margins are too tight to try and feed through for me.
It seems everyone wants to plan like every year is going to be horrible, when it’s usually more like 2 out of ten.
