At what point is it better to buy hay or pay somebody to do your own?

I can buy hay for not a lot more than paying to get mine done. I’m thinking I can clip high, run more cattle, and not remove OM and still come out ahead buying.

Am I wrong? Same type of hay for about 2x the cost of having it baled.

A lot of years I can buy grass hay in big rounds cheaper than I can bale it. But if you need quality, or worried about a drought, I prefer to put up our own.

A few years ago when ditch hay was $100+ a bale, a lot of guys regretted doing what you are thinking. I would bale a minimum amount, and buy the good buys.
