Nebraska | Knife and spin. Doesn't matter the size or time of year. We've cut and spun bulls weighing 1200 in mid June before and got along fine(bulls that didn't make the cut to get used or sold). Ability to work or feed cattle properly will have more effect on performance than castration method. The only time I would consider banding to have any advantage at all(I don't buy it's less stressful) would be if the bull was used for a season and then you wanted to castrate. It MIGHT be lower risk than a knife then as everything is that much more mature including blood vessels. It would be easier but I still don't think less stress or less flies, as the heal time from cutting appears faster than banding. | |
