Subject: John Deere 4600 Display limitations?

This past spring we purchased a 2016 John Deere R Tractor with a 4600 display. We opted to install the full data record keeping software into the 4600.

First of all the 4600 display in my opinion is not ready for “big” time yet. Navigation and screen layouts are not very user friendly. Maybe other farmers have opinions that I would like to hear.

My comments are focused on the data collected. At the time we started recording the “as applied” data I didn’t realize that the data collected could not be loaded into Apex. All data MUST be loaded into the John Deere Operations Center. I was told by 1-800-GreenStar, rep, that Apex will not read 4600 data. It is a completely different data file format and Apex will not be updated to read this file structure.

I am not a big fan of loading farm data unto a server unless I WANT TO, not being forced to. As we go forward, the new John Deere sprayers, combines, and planters will all operate with the 4600 (4640) display. It looks like if you are a Deere customer and want to purchase the newer technology they offer they are going to get our data if we like it or not. So much for being a "open data" company

Now some will say; “In the operation center, you can opt out sharing data”, this is true, but they put strict limitations on the data analysis you can view. Guess I didn't read the fine print before I purchased the new tractor and "MOTHER" deere knows better than I do.

Nothing like being between a rock and hard place.

Any thoughts?

Gary
