Latimer Iowa | We own, along with another farmer the local grocery store. Local stores are imperative for the success of your community. Please shop there instead of Sam’s, hyvee, etc. our store, in town of 500, only sells about 20% of the local grocery market. My wife, pickier then most, can get 80% of her groceries at our store and says our prices are actually very comparable to the big guys. We get our groceries from a family owned distributor and order from the owner and try to sell as many local products as possible.
We have been open 7 years and the last 3 we have lost 20 grand a year or so. We knew it would be a struggle going in but are willing to subsidize for the community. Our store has helped draw in a new bank and a new medical clinic that would not be there without it. Our school popular is rising as quality people want to live where there is a store. If you want to see your town die like so many keep shopping at Sams, hyvee, super value. You might not get the exact item you want locally but there will be a worthwhile substitute.
