I'm referring to the clutch packs you more then likely "smoked"
You can pull the pan on the reverser. I think it's 6 or 8 bolts really pretty small..everything you said that has happened leads me to believe you burnt the clutches..check the screen though maybe you stirred something up driving it home....
I changed my reverser myself. I think it was around 2500
