| I seed several different varieties with maturities from 1900-2700 CHU. Our area average CHU is 1950. Probably most of these varieties aren’t even available further south. I’m using P6909R, P7213R, P7455R, P7861R, PS 2320, PS2420, PS ExSeed, and PS Expand.
I split the planter with half being a low CHU variety and half being a higher CHU. Try to cover the bases if we get a good summer and not have too much cob development.
I do realize what I can grow in our short season up here doesn’t hold a candle to what most everywhere else can grow.
I’ve done the math and can afford to “waste” a fair bit before I’d recover my cost to chop and feed it. Most of this ground has been abused and needs all the organic matter it can have. It is improving the tilth and texture of the soil so there is value that I can’t put a $ figure to also. The best part is no manure to haul either. | |
