Subject: RE: Grazing corn?

Driftless SW Wisconsin

I’ve done it and it works well. I had yearling steers rotationally grazing corn with good hay behind them all winter. I do think you need to control how much is open to graze. Cattle will trample 40 acres looking for every ear before they eat anything else and can die from too much grain, at least in high yield Midwest corn. Maybe in Alberta (where this practice originated) it’s different.

i used to drive down a path through the corn with the ranger and put up a hot wire across the corn strip. Also don’t graze until the plant is mature or it can cause nitrate poisoning. I found planting any leafy conventional corn works best.
