Croswell, Michigan | I have had more planters than I care to count in the last 20 years. I currently have a Deere 1990 air seeder and previously had a 1790 12/24 and Kinze split row prior to that. I knew I was taking a step backwards in seed metering going to the air seeder.

Air seeder pluses:
1. Center fill
2. Can plant small grain as well as beans
3. Relatively easy to run

Negatives:
1. Just like a drill, it’s harder to calibrate
2. They are a pain in the neck to work on.

I liked the 1790 12/24 15” planter that I had but you do have 24 individual meters to deal with vs. basically one on the air seeder. Calibrating is much easier.

In my case I was renting my neighbors 20’ 1590 drill for wheat and while it usually worked out because I was done with beans before him in the fall, I knew there would be a year where we both needed it at the same time. I didn’t want to buy another planter so I opted for one planter that would do both. I have scales on my air seeder so I get pretty close to the seed drop I am looking for. Two years in and I have no regrets.
