Beresford, SD | Creep is just 70% oats, 10% feedlot liquid supplement and 20% cracked corn.......less corn when small. I feel in my brome grass environment it’s imperative. Plus the calves are monsters! These are my early spring born calves......just shy of 12 months old.
Wayne, I haven’t had cows all that long. I’m still learning: But, 3 things I’ve learned really fast in my program.....1) Buy good Terminal bulls, in my case going from leased Angus bulls to buying Simm bulls added at least 100# to the weaning weights, 2) creep feeding and putting the hammer down on the calves in the yard will take 3 months off the time cycle of birth to finish. 3) most important, you can’t get by with minimal inputs on a cow, she needs groceries to be productive. Last year when I weaned most my calves went into the peewee pens at the feedyard, I was very pissy about it. This year, I had to sort and make a small pen at the feedyard just for my front enders!
