If your pump runs full speed or off then a relay would be fine. However in this situation, the controller will be sending out a PWM signal which turns ON/OFF very rapidly to in effect change the average voltage that the pump motor gets. This is often 100 HZ or 100 times/second. A relay is not designed to do that. The EMD that he refers to is designed for that purpose. They are not terribly expensive.
