I think some of these new bulbs have limitations as to orientation. They contain heat-generating in their bases and may need to be right-side up. Others are okay to install horizontally or even upside-down (base up). Check the package before buying.
Most also do not allow installation in enclosed fixtures, they will overheat and fail.
Just a friendly warning for anyone using CFL style bulbs.
