| Most Linux distros will run from a USB. I believe Linux Mint Cinnamon is most like Windows.
When I did this I had purchased a new computer (it was time) Here are some links:
https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=281
https://www.lifewire.com/create-uefi-bootable-linux-mint-usb-2202084
https://linuxmint-guides.linuxsecrets.com/en/latest/boot_options.htm...
https://itsfoss.com/install-linux-mint/
1st link is Linux Mint download site
2nd link gives steps to create a bootable USB.
3rd link shows what comes up using the bootable USB
4th link is similar to 2nd link, you can ignore first warning in red, but DO NOT click on install Linux button once Linux is running from the USB.
Steps (I won't do this well)
1 Make a bootable USB. This is basically a USB with a file (.iso) so it appears to be a DVD. Link 2 shows one way, there are other programs to do this also, Rufus for example.
2 On non booting computer, there should be a key or key combination to enter bios. Change bios so USB is first mounting device
3 Boot with Linux USB inserted
4 You should be able to click on LM icon in lower left corner to pull up a menu. You are looking for a file folder icon or Menu:Accessories:Files
5 Hopefully something will come up recognizable as Windows disk
Edit: I sent you an email
