Camp Douglas Wi. 40miles nw of wi. dells | I Been feeding out Holstein steers on whole shelled corn and pellets for 50 years, bout the time Doboy came out with Tean-dr-lean pellets. Feedin out 250 head a year, buying all 250 at 500 lbs in winter time and sell Late fall through early winter At 1500 lbs as that’s when I had time. Next generation runs day to day operations now that I’m signing SS checks.
We milked cows till 1997, but was building cash grain enterprise all the time sense early 70s, so we have all the equipment for that. But have no forage handling equipment except haybines, rakes and round baler or forage storage.
Early years rented neighbors barn to feed out steers, then in 97 converted old dairy barn and built opened shed for Holstein steers. Built 4 steer stuffers that hold 15,000 lbs each. Start tractor make feed once every 5-7 days depending on size of steers.
Have made a lot of money over the long haul, for not much investment.
Ok let’s look across the fence, you’re gonna bunk feed everyday at least Once maybe twice. So gonna start TMR tractor and skid steer/loader tractor or as some on here say gotta have end loader, that’s everyday. Gotta have choppers, wagons/trucks, concrete slab/bunkers/silos.
Back in the mid 80s when interest was 15% + banker and I had a heated debate over bunk feeding and whole shelled corn and pellets. He thought I could make more money bunk feeding, I said maybe but all the support equipment that I needed to bunk feed at 15%+ interest over stuffers, he’d make take all the profit.
There you have it, an old mans opinion, so take for what it’s worth.
