I would say it’s between the renter and the landlord on what is acceptable for that land. Probably not the way you would run it and it does seem like your friend wasted your time, but.......landlords have some strange ideas on how “their” ground should be farmed.
I don’t think it’s your business to talk to the landlord. You might end up costing your friend the acreage.
