| Jimson weed (and velvet leaf) will persist in the seed bank for decades if the soil is undisturbed (e.g., a long term hayfield or CRP) but row crop production seems to promote germination... and more rapid seed bank depletion IF you can prevent seed production.
Over the last 10 years we have both intensified our use of cover crops and changed our tillage practices... so it is possible that the soil biology is now suppressive of JW or that we activated dormant JW seeds more completely and thus depleted the seed bank more effectively.
