What if the additional leg of your Y cable was less than the stub length specification? Then the "Y" cable becomes effectively just a stub.

Off topic, but I'm going to ask just because you sound like a person knowledgeable enough to know...I've long wondered about the back end terminator. Does the standard IBBC as used by everyone automatically apply a termination to the bus when there is no implement connected, and remove it when an implement is connected? That's the only way I can envision the system remaining in spec at all times, but I've never found a definitive answer that this is the way it works.
