South Central MN | Last year I had corn that looked like that, filled all the way to the tip or very close. Thing is the cobs themselves were smaller than normal, I think the corn was under some stress early on and decided it was only going to make a certain sized ear, and once things improved later on it was already locked into that size, so it made the most of what it had set out to do.
I planted a bit heaver than I normally would have on the last couple fields I did last year, and seems that was the thing to do. Problem is you never know how your growing season is going to turn out so it is just a shot in the dark with population, you can get pretty close to optimal but mother nature has the final say. | |
