Doesn't anyone remember the bumper jack? Worked pretty much the same way, and if you let loose of the tire/lug wrench (aka: jack handle) before it "clicked in", it would let itself down, wildly ratcheting, and usually throw the tire/lug wrench in the process. I think every car made before the 1970's had one as standard issue. Mine all did.
I have a handyman jack, and use it at times, but it has limitations. Never had a close call with one (yet).
