Before the white man there were small fires every year. Some just burned under growth, some burned everything. When the white man came we put out fires, but replaced fire with logging and grazing livestock. In recent years the livestock have been pushed off the forest and logging has been slowed to a crawl. The result is what you see happening with the current fires.
