I 100% believe in the phantom yield loss. Have seen it many times over the years. For my situation I feel like I can shell 20-22% corn and pay for the dryer gas with the extra bushels. I would prefer to be done by the time corn hits 18 but that doesn't usually happen. That being said almost all my corn is coming home to go in the bin to be hauled at a later date. If I had very little storage I would rethink it because of having to handle it twice at harvest.

In the Purdue study grain moisture was estimated with an electronic moisture meter. Moisture meters are often less accurate at moisture contents above 25 percent. We used oven-dry weights.
Our results show stable grain dry matter after black layer and do not support the need for early harvest and the associated energy expense for grain drying

The results of our study were in agreement with
most of the research illustrating no kernel dr y matter loss
after PM, but were different in showing minimal ear loss due
to stalk lodging across harvest date. Our study also showed
that grain composition should not be an issue of concern for
delayed harvest after PM. Results support our hypothesis and
suggest that corn can be harvested at any time after PM with
the least possibility of any dry matter and grain composition
penalties.
