They were selling gas stabilizer long before ethanol was ever around. The older small gas 2cycle engines handle sitting around much better than the new ones from my experience. I have a newer stihl weed eater on second carburetor. Blame it on ethanol only thing is when they replaced it the first time I went 100% gas to see. Like many things it was made cheaper and ethanol is the scape goat.
