Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I'm not sure of your situation. I used an Insight in a couple of combines with a low end WAAS only GPS for several years with good results. For yield monitoring the GPS requirements are very minimal compared to application or planting unless steering is involved. I did not attempt steering with the Insight in the combine although it was used for steering in the Planting tractor with a Trimble 332 and Nav II.
You mention a screen showing ground speed pulses but not actual speed. You question the need for the distance calibration. The distance calibration only pertains to the transmission ground speed sensor. It defaults to 2000 as I recall. It is necessary to calibration the transmission sensor if you ever plan on using it. It is a good idea to calibrate it before harvest even if you don't ever plan on using it. There is no calibration for GPS speed.
You choose the ground speed source on another screen. Generally with GPS, I have mine set to use GPS for the ground speed with the transmission as a backup.
Your situation of showing no ground speed puzzles me. If yours is set to transmission speed. I would suspect a ground speed indication even though it might be incorrect since the calibration defaults to 2000. With Deere combines, this would be way off on a new install before calibration but there still was an indication. I believe the Deere cal was something around 3000. It might be useful to check the current transmission ground speed calibration value to be certain it is not zero for some reason.
The GPS system would need to be set with the NEMA messages of GGA and VTG both ON. I always thought of VTG as meaning Velocity To Go (it doesn't but the memory aid is helpful). The Insight should be happy enough at 1 Hz for yield monitoring.
At this point, if it were me, I would purposely set the ground speed choice as transmission and see if you show speed. Then do a calibration even if you plan on using GPS for speed. If you get reasonable speed after that, then go back to using GPS for the speed source and try that again. If you are then getting GPS location information but still no ground speed, I would think the problem is in the output settings from the GPS.
Generally the Insight was very forgiving with GPS and would do its best to mate up with the various combinations possible.

Later Edit: I see your screen shots now. I'm unsure about the reference to Port B and TSIP. TSIP is necessary when using an Insight for steering as it was when I used my Insight with a 332 in the tractor. When I used the same Insight in the combine without steering, I was using a WAAS only receiver which was Raven GPS and not capable of TSIP. I don't think that TSIP is necessarily the problem but it is a thought. Are you actually using Port B? Again that shouldn't be a problem but might be a source of the confusion in settings.
