Appliances in general have become totally unreliable. We had an 8 year old LG crawl up and die on us in January. We had a local independent repair guy look at it. He said the compressor was shot. The unit had a ten year compressor warranty but no surprise it didn't include labor and Freon to replace it. He said that alone could run $500 to $600. He also said there is a circuit board somewhere in the damn thing that goes bad almost without fail and can run another $500 to $600. He had enough bad experiences dealing with LG that he said he quit doing warranty work for them. Just wasn't worth the hassle. He doesn't sell new appliance so I believe him when he gives me the low down on something. He said all new appliance are junk but advised us to go with Whirlpool/Matag for the fridge. Best of the worst I guess. When we went shopping even the sales people advised us that if we got 8 years out of a new refrigerator we should consider ourselves lucky. Five to six years seems to be catching a lot of them. So we elected to cut our losses and not repair the LG and move onto something else that hopefully will be more easy to repair when it craps out. All this energy efficient crap has turned our appliances into junk. I guess they do save on energy since they don't seem to being running much!
