My daughter did mine 2 weeks ago, it had been nearly 2 months since I'd had one. She has a set of clippers with 2 different guards and a dial on the front of them that has 7 settings. She did a good job not to be a barber or stylist, she also uses scissors and a razor comb which I had never heard of. She has trimmed Violet's hair for years and sometimes cuts her own.
