Monroe City, MO | Sunday afternoon I watched the entire game 1 of the 1968 World Series between the Cardinals and Tigers. This was Gibson's 17 strikeout game. You would be surprised what you can find that is 40 or 50 years old. I remember watching the game originally in the 4th grade. I went to a Catholic grade school and the nuns were big baseball fans. As soon as Gibson recorded his last strikeout the nun asked the unruly class what had just happened. Nobody knew what she was talking about except me. I got to watch game 2 the next day by myself.
edit: just looked, the entire 1982 series is available also. Know what I'm doing Sunday.

Tennessee | Playing catch with my boys. It's hard to do that standing in 2" of water, but we try. This is their first year playing in a league where the kids pitch, and they are so disappointed they might miss the season.

Central Illinois | Enjoy those days while they last. I had to quit playing catch when my boys got to the high school level. They simply threw too hard. |

Tennessee | My boys have a better arm than I ever did too. I guess they took after their mama. She was the star QB in the coed intramural flag football league in college. I love playing with them. They are the best boys.

| You need to read Gibson's book, "Pitch By Pitch," about that game. It is amazing what he remembers. Truly a fascinating story. He has an intriguing relationship with his catcher. Tim McCarver explained to Gibson that because he did not want to communicate with catchers, he never really knew what was coming. Gibsons said, "I thought all you did was catch the ball." McCarver responded, that there isn't a day that goes by that he isn't reminded of the beating Gibson gave him behind the plate. Gibson apologizes and says he simply never realized. It was heart-wrenching. |

According to Wikipedia: 'Gibson was surly and could be brusque even with teammates. When his catcher Tim McCarver came to the mound for a conference, Gibson brushed him off, saying "the only thing you know about pitching is it's hard to hit." ' |

Ne Nebraska | I remember watching a joint interview with Bob Gibson and Albert Pujols several years ago. Bob was asked what he'd do if Albert was at the plate and was looking inside- Bob said "I'd throw a fastball right at his head" and everyone believed him.
Bobs stats are out of this world and will never be seen again. The number of complete games pitched is crazy. |

North Central Iowa | Paint drying would be better. What a boring sport. I like playing it just can't stand to watch it. No offense to those who do like to watch it. |

Gibson did not have 20-20 vision and needed to wear glasses but did not wear them on the field and he really could not see clearly at all. At about 9:00 into the video he tells about his poor vision and then a funny story about being in San Francisco for games with the Giants. Teammate Bill White asks Gibson if he wants to go to Willie Mays with him. "Yeah, sure", he said as Willie was Gibson's idol. They get there and Willie comes to the door and greets White. Willie then sees Gibson and asks White who that is. White says that it is Gibson ( who was wearing his glasses at the time). Willie says, "Gibson? You wear glasses? Man, you're going to kill somebody out there!"
A man that attends church with us told this story about his father who played Major League baseball in the 1970's. He played with the San Francisco Giants , Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. If I remember correctly it went like this. His father once hit a home run off Gibson. Next at bat, Gibson hit him with a pitch. As he trotted down to first base he did not glance toward Gibson but he could feel Gibson staring at him so much that it felt like a burning sensation . He had respect for Gibson.

Kres has been replaying games from 2011.
I really have a distaste for sports in general, here I thought I was going to get to listen to kres radio all afternoon without being interrupted by sports. Then out of the blue they blindsided me with 2011 Cardinals season. Oh well |
