To comment on the allergy part, I remember hearing that a university somewhere (sorry for not remembering)did a study on pet and dust allergies and exposure as a newborn/young child. The ones that were exposed to had a major(somewhere around 80-90%) less chance of developing an allergy, compared to those who weren't exposed.
