Subject: Phase converters

Brazilton KS
Dave, Ed, Franz, et al, please make yet another attempt to educate me.

We run a phase converter for our grain facility. We've wired 3 phase from it to our shop. I have asked about this on some of the machinist type boards and perhaps here, and it seems that I have been told in no uncertain terms that this is not a good thing. I know it works just fine, but I don't pretend to know if it is a good thing or not a good thing.

My question, is there some reason I should not be running a lathe, mill, and/or big welder off of the rotary phase converter? I know it works, and I know I like having them, and I'm probably going to continue using them until they quit working anyway, but I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong.
