coast of Maine | We raise acres of carrots here, they will germinate easily on light soils 1/2 inch deep, they take a long time to emerge, carrot seed gets old quick, never save it from previous years, after emergence the weeds will get ahead of carrots, when carrots are 1 1/2 inch tall ish you can treat with lorox and will burn most weeds off but not carrots, but if you want the old time method, mist them at this stage with kerosene(yes kerosene)on a sunny day the weeds will burn up and carrots fine,we dont use this method but it works through out the third world for poor farmers,If your soil crusts mix some radish seed in and pull them out as they mature and carrots will be between but very small as radish are done in about 3 weeks and most carrots aprox ten weeks, pelleted carrt seed is also aproblem for some as it can take a bit of steady moisture to crack the coating, used to hate growing carrots, easy now after many screw ups in not easy to farm area | |
