Subject: Re: Lets talk insulation . . spray foams and blown types ~

We built a house last summer and after watching a TV show with the spray on insulation product demonstrated I was really impressed with it....... until it came to do it. Our contractor told us that he had just been to a trade seminar where they discussed this and while the spray on insulation industry seemed to have a good product, there were no studies to prove the extra $5000 cost (for us) would be saved/returned. I was still going to do go with the spray on until we got conflicting recommendations on the vapor barrier.... one contractor said we needed it, one said we didn't, one said we could get a special paint/sealer on the sheetrock to take care of it...... and oh, by the way, if we guessed wrong on the vapor barrier, we would have mold in our walls. With one of the spray on insulations (I can't remember which one) it isn't your wood that shrinks, it's the foam that shrinks. That didn't seem like a good deal to me.

We went with the fiberglass insulation in our walls and blown insulation in our ceilings. Both work great, very happy with our house. On a side note, after our house was built, our contractor told us to avoid installing recessed ceiling lights (we have 4 in our kitchen) as they are the worst heat loss culprit, I suppose they stick up much higher and get less insulation covering them.
