SWOH
Takes more than two kids to detassel a couple thousand acres. Or 10,000. There are still kids out there that want to work and do a good job. They aren’t as numerous as they used to be. I’m all for supporting the local communities and giving kids an opportunity at their first job and getting kids involved in agriculture that normally wouldn’t have that opportunity. But the job has to get done and get done well and on time. We’ve hired a lot of high school kids over the years and lately every year we wonder why we just don’t go to migrant labor for next year. And it’s not just the kids, the parents get worse every year. We’ve never hired migrant labor, but the last couple of years we’ve had trouble getting enough local kids to get done what we need to get done. I don’t like it anymore than some of you do but I understand completely why Pioneer would make that move and I doubt it has anything to do with wages. Maybe it’s different in other areas but we have trouble getting enough kids to begin with and when a bunch of them quit after the first day it’s a little disheartening.
