nw illinois | and I prefer the migrant crews. They are more efficient than kids and not hampered by child labor laws. The migrants dont ride on machines which is a huge plus not having to use those machines in irrigated production. Two summers ago there was a small drowned out spot in one of my fields. When the migrant got to the spot he sprinted (not exaggerating) around the wet hole to get to the other side to start pulling tassels again. A kid would have waited for his buddy to show up, shoot the $^it for a few minutes and then probably get on the wrong row at the other side of the drowned out spot. Ive got one 430 acre field they can get done in very long day if needed, would take 4 kid crews and one or two of them would probably have to quit early or do a poor job. I took my daughters and nieces to see them in action at the end of a 13 or 14 hour day. They couldnt believe how those workers were smiling and friendly after a long very hot muddy day. And they were also 2000 miles from home.
The guy in charge is a super guy, very professional. IIRC he had about 145 workers and less then ten of them were new for the year.
FWIW Only one of the five companies that grow in my area dont use migrants. Prairie Hybrids which is owned by an Amish/Mennonite family and uses that labor pool. I know at least 2 of the others used H2A long before P did so this is not something new.
