E.Central MN | I think you've got it backwards in this case. Seed companies have figured out that they save resources(money/time) by contracting out that job which includes considerably more management time than just the detasseling time. Someone has to screen and hire the workers, someone has to arrange transportion, someone has to supervise them, someone has to arrange sanitation facilities/etc. The former owners of an apple orchard would hire most of their employees locally, but it was getting harder and harder to find good workers for a seasonal job. Keep in mind that most young people only work those seasonal jobs a few years then its off to their full time careers. The new owner said that he just doesn't have the time to look for seasonal employees and then train them. He said it was easier to pay a good worker a bonus to find workers (usually Mexican migrants). Its not all roses, there are problems, too. But sometimes there is more to the story than just greedy CEOs looking to pad their salaries. | |
